Ronald McDonald House Charities of Augusta relies on our volunteers to help provide a home-away-from-home for over 1,000 families each year. Our treasured volunteer LeAnn Johnson shared her story (edited for publishing).
From LeAnn Johnson:
I have lived in the CSRA for about 9 years, having relocated from the Atlanta area for my husband’s work. After working as an RN for 15 years, I decided to retire from nursing. After several years doing in-home child care, I decided to focus on volunteering and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Augusta really spoke to my heart.
Having worked with children and families suffering illness during their weakest moments, I knew there was a definite need for families to have support. RMHC provides support in so many areas and I wanted to be a part of that.
After volunteeering for about 2 1/2 years as a “housewarmer” (getting rooms ready, welcoming guests) I’ve more recently become the “Happy Wheels lady”, as I’m referred to at the children’s hospital.
Taking the Happy Wheels Cart through the Children’s Hospital of Georgia, I take donated toys, collected by Ronald McDonald House Charities of Augusta, up and down the halls of the Children’s Hospital to deliver to the children. It is such a pleasure to see that these donations can brighten a sick child’s day in such a simple way.
Every Monday, I load up the Happy Wheels cart and head across the campus to deliver the goodies. What a great volunteer position to have!
Happy Wheels carries all new toys, books, games, dolls and stuffed animals, DVDs, puzzles, word search and crossword books. We even have diapers and wipes to donate at times to give, not only to the patients, but to their parents and siblings. A lot of times families have to spend a good deal of time at the hospital and the toys and activities ease some of their boredom as well.
We are so grateful for the donations we receive that really help these families and are always accepting donations, and welcome any new toy, game, or activity that folks want to donate. One item or twenty. It all helps!
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Augusta serves over 1,000 families each year. Our volunteer run community kitchen serves over 15,000 meals, and our volunteers and families run over over 5,000 loads of laundry every year.
We hope that this story has inspired you to get involved and help families just like this one. The staff, our volunteers and the Board of Directors thank the Heath family for sharing their story and we hope everyone will get involved.
